Beach Music is uptempo, good-time pop-soul -- in other words, it's party music. Appropriately, it received its name through its constant presence at parties on the Eastern coast. After all, there really isn't a specific "beach music" -- the partiers on the East Cost gave these pop/rock and soul songs the name because these were the records they played on the beach during the '60s. It was all high-energy pop and soul in the vein of Motown. Often, there were regional stars, such as General Johnson, and there were regional hits, but just as frequently national records were played locally. Although it had ceased to have national impact by the beginning of the '70s, beach music retained its popularity for decades, and it was still holding strong in the late '90s.
