AllMusic Loves 2021 Reissues

The archival releases of 2021 tended to fall into a few different camps. There were blockbuster expansions from superstars such as the Beatles, who not only released a "super deluxe" edition of their final album Let It Be -- appearing alongside Peter Jackson's epic Get Back documentary -- but also mammoth box sets of George Harrison's All Things Must Pass and John Lennon's John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band. Jazz listeners had reason to rejoice, as the entirety of trumpeter Lee Morgan's landmark 1970 stint at the Hermosa Beach, California club the Lighthouse was released as an eight-disc set. Big box sets weren't limited to single albums, either. Gang of Four's pioneering post-punk run from 1977-1981 was boxed up in a hefty set, while Texan blues legend Jimmie Vaughan had his story told in an epic box. Plenty of riches were offered in slimmer sets of 21st century rarities from Stereolab, early home recordings from His Name Is Alive, and 1980s Japanese electronic music, as well as an excavated complete live performance of John Coltrane's A Love Supreme. These albums along with many others gave us plenty of reasons to love the reissues of 2021.
