Glockenspiel
The glockenspiel ("play of bells") consists of a set of steel bars of graduated length, played with a pair of mallets. The bars are suspended in a frame, but generally lack resonators. (Terminological confusion arises when both the glockenspiel and the resonating tubular bells are colloquially referred to as "bells.") The glockenspiel was first used in Handel's opera Saul in 1739, and was put to marvelous effect by Mozart in the scenes involving Papageno's bells in The Magic Flute. It is a mainstay of the large orchestra of the Romantics, and has been cultivated by numerous pop and jazz musicians.
