With big, ringing guitars alongside distant, buzzing vocals, it's easy to hear the past coming alive again on Optimists, the debut LP from Washington, DC, five-piece Mittenfields. At a cozy eight tracks, it's a quick, engaging listen, with more than enough melody and inspiration to propel it beyond a mere exercise in nostalgia. We're partial to the crackling nervous energy of "Telepathic Windows," but maybe the slow, sprawling closer "Surprise Me" is more your speed. Optimists is out on April 28.
